چکیده
phase noise, coherent reflectometry, FMCW, Rayleigh backscattering, fiberoptic interferometry An analysis of coherent optical FMCW is presented. It shows the limitations imposed on measurements of discrete reflections and of Rayleigh backscattering due to phase noise originating in the finite coherence length of the optical source. The dependence of the range for accurate measurements on particular parameters of the optical system is discussed in the general case and for three specific laser sources.

Extended-Range High-Resolution FMCW Reflectometry by Means of Electronically Frequency-Multiplied Sampling Signal Generated from Auxiliary Interferometer
High-resolution FMCW reflectometry is often realized by sampling the beat signal with a clock signal generated from an auxiliary interferometer. The drawback of this system is that the measurement range is limited to less than half of the optical path difference of the auxiliary interferometer to satisfy the Sampling theorem. We propose and demonstrate a method to extend the measurement range o...
متن کاملSelf-Mixing Demodulation for Coherent Phase-Sensitive OTDR System
Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Ф-OTDR) attracts much attention due to its capability of telling the type and position of an intrusion simultaneously. In recent decades, coherent Ф-OTDR has been demonstrated to realize long-distance detection. For coherent Ф-OTDR, there are three typical demodulation schemes in the reported studies. However, they still cannot realize real-tim...
متن کاملCapabilities and Limitations of Coherent Optical Frequency–domain Reflectometry
Optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR), originally developed by Barnoski and Jensen in 1976 [1], is now a well-established tool for non-destructive characterization of optical networks and components. In general an ideal reflectometry system would have a spatial resolution high enough to locate closely separated sites of reflection within the network under test. In addition the sensitivity wo...
متن کاملPrecisely controllable broadband frequency sweeps using a semiconductor laser in an optoelectronic phase-lock loop
We demonstrate the generation of wideband frequency sweeps using a semiconductor laser in an optoelectronic phase-lock loop. The rate of the optical frequency sweep is locked to and determined by the frequency of a reference electronic signal, leading to an agile, high coherence sweptfrequency source for laser ranging and 3-D imaging applications. Using a reference signal of constant frequency,...
متن کاملSimulation of Noise within Botda and Cotdr Systems to Study the Impact on Dynamic Sensing
Real-time structural health monitoring requires dynamic sensing of distributed strain and temperature. Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) and Rayleigh Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (COTDR) are promising candidates to achieve dynamic sensing. A noise model with specific parametric simulation of independent laser and detector noise sources has been developed. Although ens...
